Sterlite initially began with six draw towers, produced by Nextrom, for manufacturing optical fiber
These towers were made in the year 2000, but as technology and manufacturing speed evolved, significant changes occurred
To keep up with advancements, Sterlite opted to upgrade the towers with modern technology and enhanced speed
Megha Engineering was tasked with this project and successfully refurbished all six draw towers. They installed a new preform feed system along with a dual changeover to minimize loading and unloading downtime
Work Completed
Increased tower height by 2 meters
Installed a new preform feed unit
Installed a new take-up system
Replaced old control system with new advanced PLC hardware
Achievements
Boosted line speed from 1200 to 2200 meters per minute
Implemented the use of double joint preform
Decreased changeover time from 70 minutes to 20 minutes
